Leading Law Students Take on TASC
TASC's Law Student Volunteer Program has commenced!
In early October 2009, two of USQ's leading law students started working with TASC.
Chris Gunthorpe and Joshua Anderson have juggled lectures and exams with researching files, interviewing clients, and assisting in the development of a new TASC initiative,nWhat's Your Problem. This project will provide 24-7 access to an extensive range of legal information covering both civil and criminal law. This project will be online within three months.
Josh has a longstanding commitment to social justice, and sees TASC as the perfect avenue for putting his ideas into practice. He chose TASC because of its innovative, multidisciplinary approach to social and legal problems. Josh is keen to contribute to the wellbeing of disadvantaged and marginalised people in the community.
Likewise, Chris, a former teacher, is passionate about ensuring equitable access to legal advice. For him, working at TASC is about tackling real life problems and legal issues -a far cry from the imaginary scenarios played out in the classroom. Chris finds that each day at TASC leaves him feeling satisfied that his work has genuinely helped someone.
Chris and Josh are also involved with the Queensland Criminal Justice Centre and the Disability Law Project. This has seen them attending the Magistrates Court and observing proceedings where unsoundness of mind and fitness for trial are at issue. Josh is not only keen to work in this field, but also wants to create lasting change and help 'spread the word' about disability law reform in the criminal justice system.
