New York Court Innovations: Red Hook, Bronx and Midtown

Thursday 23rd Jul 2009

TASC staff members Sue Gordon and Andrew Caple have recently visited and observed first hand a number of Community Courts in New York City, on a scholarship provided by The Advocacy and Support Centre's Smarter State initiative. The Center for Court Innovation, works in conjunction with problem solving Courts that exist throughout New York City, notably in the once notorious suburbs of Red Hook, Bronx and Midtown.

When asked about her impression of the operation of these Courts Sue Gordon commented:

To say the experience was hugely enlightening is not nearly strong enough. What I found really amazing was how our own Disability Law Project embodies so many of the principles found at these Courts. These courts are applying the principles of therapeutic jurisprudence. Judges have a personal interactive role with the defendant. A dedicated social worker is attached to the court. There is a positive and integrated involvement of the entire legal system, from police to solicitors to the judiciary. This integration of people and services addresses the individuals' respective underlying issues in a holistic manner. It is no longer a revolving door of repeat offenders but rather an intervention that offers an opportunity to the defendant, the opportunity to turn his or her life around. The critical supports and the holistic wrap around of services often mean for the first time in a defendant's life they have a real chance to play a positive role in their community.

The Center for Court Innovation has a number of videos and podcasts that show and talk about the history, the actual operation and the role of all participants in the criminal justice system. Check our links for more information on how to view these videos.
